Tissue microstructure characterisation through relaxometry and diffusion MRI using sparse component analysis

چکیده
We introduce a new approach to characterise brain tissue microstructure combining diffusion MRI and relaxometry. The tissue is modelled as a composition of water pools with distinct T2 and diffusivities. Mathematically, we establish a blind source separation framework that we solve using sparse component analysis. Results show that this technique is able to extract distinct diffusion and relaxometry properties of the different water pools.

Quantitative T2 mapping of white matter: applications for ageing and cognitive decline
In MRI, the coherence lifetime T2 is sensitive to the magnetic environment imposed by tissue microstructure and biochemistry in vivo. Here we explore the possibility that the use of T2 relaxometry may provide information complementary to that provided by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in ageing of healthy controls (HC), Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). T2 and diffus...

Quantitative MRI (qMRI) provides standardized measures of specific physical parameters that are sensitive to the underlying tissue microstructure and are a first step towards achieving maps of biologically relevant metrics through in vivo histology using MRI. Recently proposed models have described the interdependence of qMRI parameters. Combining such models with the concept of image synthesis...

Adaptive working memory (WM) training may lead to cognitive benefits that are associated with white matter plasticity in parietofrontal networks, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We investigated white matter microstructural changes after adaptive WM training relative to a nonadaptive comparison group. Microstructural changes were studied in the superior longitudinal fasci...
متن کاملCharacterization of Cerebral White Matter Properties Using Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Stains
The image contrast in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly sensitive to several mechanisms that are modulated by the properties of the tissue environment. The degree and type of contrast weighting may be viewed as image filters that accentuate specific tissue properties. Maps of quantitative measures of these mechanisms, akin to microstructural/environmental-specific tissue stains, may be...
متن کاملEstimation of Tissue Microstructure Using a Deep Network Inspired by a Sparse Reconstruction Framework
Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) provides a unique tool for noninvasively probing the microstructure of the neuronal tissue. The NODDI model has been a popular approach to the estimation of tissue microstructure in many neuroscience studies. It represents the diffusion signals with three types of diffusion in tissue: intra-cellular, extra-cellular, and cerebrospinal fluid compartment...
